Why Use More Than One LDN® Pad?

When the LDN was first developed, it was the first spray nozzle for pivots that let irrigators stack multiple pads on one applicator.

The LDN was designed this way because spray nozzles with single pads were having trouble accommodating to the increasing flows along the outer spans of a pivot.

Large center pivots may have different water flow and pressure rates moving through their pipes depending on how close the pipeline is to the water source. Usually, they are designed for sprinklers with lower flows closer to the pivot point and higher flows near their ends. If flows are too high, wasteful overwatering could occur near the pivot point. This results in surface sealing, runoff, and erosion. If flows are too low, sprinklers cannot adequately cover their entire wetted area or apply the proper amount of water for the crop.

The LDN works around this issue with its multiple pads. Each additional pad has extra grooves that divide an incoming stream into multiple streams – up to a maximum of 99 streams. This enables the LDN to handle large flows without losing control of where it’s sending water. It also helps maintain a uniform application along the entire pivot.

With its multiple pads, the LDN helps irrigators spread water over a larger area with low application intensity. This gentler distribution pattern preserves the soil structure by better matching the soil’s infiltration rate. Good infiltration maximizes irrigation efficiency, minimizes erosion and reduces costs.

Pad Combinations

Since the LDN uses multiple pads and deflectors, the diameter of coverage you can achieve with the LDN is incredibly flexible. Each pad has its own trajectory and distance throw, so water isn’t concentrating in one place at any time.

In addition to different trajectories, LDN pads also come in different surfaces with a varying number of grooves. The different grooves help customize the sprinkler’s droplet size and distribution pattern to your needs.

Consult Senninger Technical Support for specific details on the LDN’s reach using various pad combinations.

The blue concave pad distributes water at a 10° angle for a larger distance throw. The black flat pad distributes water straight out at no angle. The green convex pad throws water closer to the ground in a -10° angle.
